CAHPS® In-Center Hemodialysis (ICH)
The CAHPS® ICH Survey is designed to measure patients’ experiences receiving care in dialysis facilities with the goal of measuring and improving care delivery.
CMS has adopted the CAHPS® survey for PY 2014 End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Quality Improvement Plan (QIP). Our survey program allows facilities to meet CMS reporting requirements for collecting and reporting on patient experience.
There is one survey instrument available (CAHPS® ICH adult version 1.0). The questionnaire has 58 questions and includes an optional 20 supplemental questions to choose from.
The survey addresses components of care such as Nephrologists’ communication and caring, quality of the dialysis center and operations, providing information to patients, and overall satisfaction with doctor, staff and dialysis center.
For facilities with more than 200 patients, a random sample of 200 patients will be drawn for inclusion in the survey. For facilities with less than 200 patients, a census is conducted.
DSS offers both of the AHRQ prescribed ICH methodologies:
- Telephone only
- Mail with telephone follow up
The program is currently in pay-for-reporting mode and CMS is interested only if the facility has administered the survey correctly using the AHRQ prescribed survey and methodology. CMS states that it may at some point in the near future move to a pay-for performance mode. Facilities must attest to administration of the survey through CROWNWeb no later than Jan 30, 2013.
